Why labels talk about absorption.
Curcumin is one of the yellow compounds in turmeric root. NCCIH notes that oral curcumin products vary in how much curcumin they actually contain, and that they often include substances from other plants — piperine from black pepper being the usual one. It describes combining curcumin with piperine as one way to improve curcumin’s bioavailability. [3]
That is the honest meaning of “high absorption” on a bottle: the maker did something to the formulation. It tells you about the design of the product. It does not tell you that the product will do something for you — that is a separate question, and the answer to it is not settled. [3]
A serving is two capsules.
The product featured here is the 120-capsule Doctor’s Best High Absorption Curcumin listed on iHerb. The manufacturer lists turmeric-root extract standardised with Curcumin C3 Complex® together with BioPerine® black-pepper extract, in a vegetarian hypromellose capsule. [1] [2]
| Serving size | 2 veggie capsules |
|---|---|
| Servings per bottle | 60 |
| Turmeric-root extract Curcumin C3 Complex® | 1,000 mg per serving Standardised to 95% curcuminoids |
| Black-pepper extract BioPerine® | 6 mg per serving Standardised to 95% piperine |
| Capsule | Vegetarian (hypromellose) |
Read that first number carefully: 1,000 mg is the extract in a full two-capsule serving, not 1,000 mg of pure curcumin in each capsule. Formulations, packaging and prices change; the label on the bottle you receive is the one that counts.
Four things that make labels comparable.
- Find the serving size first.Everything else on a Supplement Facts panel is “per serving”. A bottle whose serving is two capsules is not directly comparable to one whose serving is one.
- Separate extract from curcuminoids.“1,000 mg turmeric extract, standardised to 95% curcuminoids” and “1,000 mg curcuminoids” are different statements. Check which one the panel makes.
- See what the absorption claim rests on.Black-pepper extract, a phospholipid complex and a micronised form are different approaches. The label should say which one it uses.
- Then check the purchase conditions.Price, currency, availability, shipping and returns for your country are set by the retailer, and can differ from what a guide like this one saw on any given day.
What the research does — and does not — support.
The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that the evidence is not sufficient to draw definite conclusions about health benefits of turmeric or curcumin. A formulation that is absorbed better than another is still not, by itself, evidence of a health outcome. [3]
Read the cautions with the same attention.
Talk to a healthcare professional before starting any supplement, and particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking anticoagulants or other prescription medicines, or preparing for surgery. NCCIH notes reports of liver injury associated with some enhanced-bioavailability curcumin products. Read the complete safety information and the current package label before use, and keep supplements out of reach of children. [1] [3]
